The largest of Belize’s 200 offshore caye’s, Ambergris Caye is only 35 miles from Belize City. It is a only quarter of a mile from the second largest barrier reef in the world, making it an excellent mecca for divers. With a population of approximately 8,000, Ambergris Caye still has a small island feel. Located just off the tip of the Mexican peninsula, the island is only separated from Mexico by a small channel dug by the ancient Mayan. Ambergris Caye is only 25 miles long and 1 mile wide at it’s widest point! The waters around the island are typically shallow and the brightest of Caribbean blues. The living on the island is so casual that going barefoot is appropriate just about anywhere. Things just seem to slow down when you enter Belize Time!
Ambergris Caye is extremely central, you have diving and snorkeling trips to the front of the island and at the back there is plenty of fish to be caught in the lagoon. There is also an amazing abundance of bird life on the island. Perfect for the avid bird fan, the mangroves are home to a number of species. Conveniently, the island is approximately a 20 minute flight from Belize City making it very easy to scheduling day trips to the mainland.
San Pedro is the only town on the island. Starting in the coconut industry, it gained popularity as a fishing village, and today is recognized as a tourist and dive central. Here the streets are lined with unique little buildings in almost every color. You will find most everything you need within walking distance. There are many modern conveniences, such as internet cafes, atms/banks, and an Island Super Market that has most American brands. The atmosphere on the island still remains best described as a small fishing village. With a short stroll through the town, you will find the local people to be friendly and willing to offer information, as well as tell you a local tale or two.
The nationality on the island is quite diverse, making a rare culture mix. Typically you will find Mayan, Garifuna, Caribbean, and Mexican descents. The locals speak English, but will just as quickly slip into a Creole, Spanish or Mayan dialects. Here the locals are appreciative of their history and more then one will be willing to share it with you.
A must see is the North end of the island, where the resorts will take your breath away. The peace and quite will be just what you are looking for. There is an abundance of unique, one of a kind restaurants and lounges that add spice to the evenings. If you choose to stay closer to town, then renting a golf cart or a bicycle and traveling up North for the day is absolutely essential! Once you arrive outside of town, you will reach “The River” or “The Cut.” Here the island is actually cut in two by a relatively small stream. North of the cut, there is less development and the mood, even more relaxed. You definitely will feel like you have escaped into a new hidden world all of your own.
Ambergris has a very attractive night life. The evenings in San Pedro are definitely a social event. Dancing is appropriate almost anywhere! The downtown always has something going on every night of the week, you just have to know where to look! It is not unusual, as the sun drops into the horizon, to see both tourist and islanders gather to share drinks over the telling of the daily events. While listening to the local Reggae and Latin music softly playing in the background, your troubles melt away and memories of Ambergris Caye take their place.

Ambergris Caye is an up and coming little island. It has seen much growth over the years. The country of Belize has taken extra precautions in helping to prevent the over growth of this little island. No building are allowed to exceed the height of three stories, in town and four stories, north of the island. This is to prevent the over development that is so commonly seen in neighboring Mexico.
The proposal of building a second town on the North end of Ambergris Caye is currently in progress. With the majority of development having taken place primarily to the South part of the island, the North is now expanding in bounds! Leading to several investment opportunities on both sides of the island!
